From the early 1500s, Florida’s ample coastline has attracted pirates. Spanish vessels used these as stopping places after long stretches at sea. Pirates quickly learned about these stops and started to attack the Spanish ships, which were often filled with all sorts of treasure and expensive goods. In the mid-1500s, Florida placed the Spanish admiral Don Pedro Menendez to governor. Menendez was tasked with driving the pirates away, to which he was successful, but the many battles and infamous pirates still left their mark on Florida history.
Is there any undiscovered pirate treasure in the Florida Keys? Where can you find a leviathan in Orlando? Were some pirates cross dressers? Find out all this and more on this weeks episode of Just a Podcast in Paradise.
